Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
one could only hope. I may go Westfield to see it, but with 4 films next week,I should really stay at home and catch up on the Sky+
Onassis
I went to see this yesterday, and really enjoyed it. Not only did it educate me, but I thought there were a lot of funny moments. Appreciated the performances, loved the singing and thought the set was fabulous.
Thanks for posting the code.

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
Just came back from seeing Onassis at the Novello Theatre. "That's Onassis with double s in the middle", just in case you didn't know. The theatre itself is very pretty, and we got good seats in the back of the stalls, which is what we'd asked for. There is more legroom than I anticipated, but not much of a slope, so how much you see depends on the person in front of you. Luckily we saw more or less most of the stage, but the seats are really really uncomfortable.
It started promising and I loved the first half hour, which was very funny, but then the stale air in the theatre made me feel like a lie down, it certainly made me very woozy and yawny. The constant dancing and singing of melancholy Greek songs was a bit repetitive, it felt like being on holiday in Greece with the local taverna having decided to put on a bit of a show for the tourists. It is so stereotypical! Robert Lindsay's Greek accent wasn't all that wonderful either. I am afraid he will always be Ben Harper to me, whether he can dance a Greek dance or not. I wouldn't go and see it again, I thought it was a bit of a pointless play, and the characters weren't all that engaging.

just back from Onassis as well; same here we were at the back of the stall, very good seat and pretty decent leg room.
I didn't think I would enjoy this play that much after reading some of the critics!
I definitely love his style, I would have fallen for him as well

Just back from seeing Caroline O'Connor: The Showgirl Within at the Garrick Theatre.
Two words. Bloody marvellous!!
We were lucky enough to get tickets kinda in the middle, 4 rows from the stage. Perfect vantage point.
Caroline was funny, entertaining and a class performer from start to finish. If you haven't heard of her, well why the hell not!?! She's a fabulous actress, singer and dancer. Her passion and versatility shone throughout the show with songs from Chicago, Meet me in St Louis, West Side story, etc. In addition to this, her version of 'Ethel's Anything Goes and, in particular, her hauntingly identical rendition of Edith Piaf's "Non, je ne regrette rien" (ya know, from the specsaver adverts
), was fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Yep, even the bf, who was fussing and sulking about being dragged out for some 'minging show' had to eat his words
He was being a pain right until the moment Caroline started singing (sorry to the people around us who had to overhear our little argument about it
) Anyway, he shut up completely and sat up straight, only opening his his mouth again during the interval to sing Caroline's praises
Oh yeah, and the band was amazing too!!
If, like my bf, you aren't a fan of musicals, don't be shy and give 'The Showgirl Within' a try. You're in for a real treat!!!!!
Caroline O'Connor FTW!!!!
I think I have a little bit of a showgirl within me too
Gonna go have a shower and sing some Chicago
If I'm slapped with an ASBO (or bf dumps me) tomorrow, you'll know how de-lovely I am, darling

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
I too saw the Onassis matinee today. I was fortunate there was nobody in front of me so my view was great. I think I overheard an incident of 'hair rage' close by when a woman seemingly complained to the woman in front of her about the height of her hairdo and could she pat it down? The answer was no.
I was vaguely familiar with Aristotle Onassis before seeing this, but more used to hearing about Jacqui and the Kennedys. It was interesting to hear the gossip from another angle. I thought the mess of interwoven relationships was depicted in a funny and entertaining way.
The whole play was much funnier than I expected. I thought the supporting cast were excellent, and although I think the main actors did a good job I thought Robert Linday's Greek and American accents were at best distracting, and at worst annoying.
He did well in the role though, which must be difficult to inhabit. I found the character quite charming despite his obvious personality foibles.
I was engrossed enough in the play to resent the interruption of the interval, and it never really seemed to rev up again during the shorter second act.
I enjoyed the Greek music and dancing (it reminded me of some prolonged stays in Crete) and I thought the set looked fantastic throughout. This production wasn't perfect, but it was much better than I expected and I think most of the audience enjoyed it.
7.5/10
