I think there is something seriously wrong when drug trafficking criminals are portrayed as "loveable rogues" and smoking glorified as cool and sexy. And yes, totally unbelievable showing Rhys Ifans throughout the film not having aged at all, from schoolboy to father of four. I can't quite believe that all this shoddy film-making would be intentional, and I hope it wasn't, as it's not working.

The cast were either dull or, like Chloe Sevigny, severly mis-cast, and the film tried to be Goodfellas meets Trainspoting, but is just a grubby mess of dull biography and generic drug dealing film. And the green screening of actors onto stock footage? I wanted to punch the director in the face, it never looked good or worked, just took me out of an already really really bad movie.

I fear for British Cinema if this is the kind of crap that gets funding, I really do. 1/10
I couldn't agree with you more, I thought it was total crap, 1/10 from me too.

Thanks to Prettyxcool I saw this in islington last night wiv friends.

Mr Nice is Howards Marks reflection on his life as a father and drug smuggler..
He was a drug trafficker which organised sell of weed in London and USA (although lot more drugs stated in book). Mark Howard film portrayed how he was and when he was living the life as a drug smuggler and he did live the high life so yes this film does come accross as this film is glamorising drug trade.. He came accross as a smart arse that became rich and lived the high life.. But he did also show his wife who is deeply in love with him who tried to talk him round to stop.. He was after all playing a dangerous game and connecting with drug barons and Jim McCann part of the IRA. He finds himself a bent accountant who launders the money through a boutiques worldwide.. He becomes an informer (that's what the M16 thought) for M16, and was a drug smuggler. But life takes a turn and he gets caught then he realises his family is suffering through his greed of the high life. He has to some what confess to save his children from abuse.
While inside he does teaching and appeals letters for prisoners. This helps him get perole. To be with his children and wife...
The film does come accross that he wanted the audience to pity him and also celebrate his cleverness of what he also achieved..
The film did come accross humourous due to situations he found himself in and how he got round the situations. Maybe he just can't believe what he had done and this humours feel was a reflection.

As a whole I enjoyed the book more and recommend the book..
If you haven't read the book then you will enjoy the film.

I rate this film 6/10 and book 10/10
reasons for the rating was disappointed that didn't show to much of the negative side as the book stated..
And so I asked friends out of ten on the film and they rated it a six.
I just thought he may of been stoned with the script writer and director while maikng this as every aspect of the film came accross hazy.. Or it was supposed to be that way becoz Howard Marks was most likely stoned all the time this was happening lol..

M16 the rifle, or M16 the postcode? ;)

The whole story reminded me of "Blow", or a pale version of it... yet another example of criminals not knowing how to quit while they're ahead.

I guess they tried to portray him favourably because he only got involved in smuggling "herbs" and not the hard drugs...

Still, for me, just an average film, if there's nothing else on... 5/10
