Re: True Grit
Complete farce at the Vue West End tonight. Got to the cinema at 6 to be told to go to screen 9. Go inside and assume we're in the wrong screen as adverts are playing. Decide to wait a few minutes anyway, watch a couple of trailers. Then at about 6.15 Love & Other Drugs starts. Definitely the wrong cinema. Go outside closely followed by most of the other people in that screen to be told by one of the Vue staff that it's in the screen opposite, a screen about 5 times smaller than the one we just left. Found a seat then went downstairs to get a coffee and there was still a long queue of people waiting to get in. Went back up to find that all the people who'd been in the previous screen couldn't fit into this one and some people had to leave, apart from some who just sat on the stairs.
Member of Vue staff b*ght small seats in from the bar downstairs so the few people sitting on the stairs could sit down (thankfully at the back and not at the front as she initially suggested), apart from one guy who decided to sit in a broken seat leaving him sitting about 6 inches higher than everyone else much to the annoyance of the woman behind him. He didn't bother to move, even when she complained. Bit rude. Film finally started 10 mins late.
Anyway all that nonsense aside, True Grit was just as great the second time. Understood a bit more of Bridges dialogue this time, possibly due to having read the book a couple of days before. Still my favourite film so far this year.

Re: True Grit
I went to see this again at Vue Leicester Square tonight as my dad likes Westerns and he wanted to see it (bless him
) and what drama! The cinema attendant sent us to screen 9 and then at 6.15 Love & Other Drugs starts playing.
So there was a mass exodus into screen 8 which had half the capacity of the other screen! It was obvious the screen would be jam packed and lots people would be sent away. Major cinema mix-up! And then on my way home, some plonker decided to get into a fight on the tracks at Leicester Square and the trains were held up why the police dealt with him.
Rant over...back to the film. I enjoyed it more the second time around. Found it funnier and Jeff Bridges was easier to understand! I appreciated the style and cinematography more this time. I recommend a second viewing for those who didn't enjoy it that much the first time!

I was unfortunately one of the few (150?) that did not make it inside!!!
it sounds that in the end it was a staff/Vue problem then?! not really what the manger told us!

I always complain to both parties, i.e. cinema and organiser and let them sort it out between them, at least one of them will usually come back to you.

I heard people talking around me that there was a typo on the cinema's schedule for the eveningCelini wrote:I was unfortunately one of the few (150?) that did not make it inside!!!

I felt so sorry some people had been sitting in screen 9 for a while and probably didn't get out in time to get a seat in the other screen. Since this was the cinema's error, I hope they were offered free tickets!

Re: True Grit
Wonderful. The best Coen brothers film since... their last one. But A Serious Man happens to be my favourite of the Coen canon, and one of my favourite films to boot. Their latest is also brilliant. There'll be plenty who enjoy this one for the wrong reasons (there always are) but thematically, it picks up where the original left off. Incidentally, I despised the original. Terrible film. Anywho...
The imagined West (i.e. its filmic representation) is treated with a great deal of nostalgia, but also significant criticism that subverts the original and the Wayne-era Western. The storytelling is great and engaging, the performances actual performances (this time it ain't no star vehicle) and very good ones at that, the direction and editing excellent and imaginative. I loved this one. The only reason it's not getting the full 10 is it didn't have a lot of time to be a full-on deconstruction - it had a lot of things going on (for example, look out for nods to Film's pre-history scattered throughout). For me, that final shot summed it up - our lead walks off into the distance; in the foreground, a tombstone that bears the inscription: "In loving memory".

Re: True Grit
That was absolutely outrageous... I dont know if you noticed but when she tried to complain he made a face like he couldnt speak English... he came in at 18:35, he snatched the seat from the poor bloke that was seating uncomfortably on the stairs and he sat smiling like it was natural sitting like... bloody hell you are one head higher then the rest of your line dont you realise that something is wrong? But I guessed he didnt bother that much... He reminded me of those people on planes that as soon as the fasten belt light switches off are reclining their seat all the way back and you dont know how to manage your legs.kevinknapman wrote: apart part from one guy who decided to sit in a broken seat leaving him sitting about 6 inches higher than everyone else much to the annoyance of the woman behind him. Anyway if it was me behind him I would have make is life impossible for the whole movie... Just a kick in his seat every now and then...
The movie was brilliant; I didnt think I could have enjoyed a western movie in 2011; not too much of a story but I have to say the acting was superb. Not that I could understand every word of Jeff Bridges but I think the southern accent added a lot to the characters. And it showed us the West the way it was: wild. As I said, very good performances from all the actors (damn she's good in negotiating) and the original final duel on the horses is a great ending. Very good cinematography as well.
Definitely one of my favourites of the year, and I'll probably enjoy it even more next time if I will watch it with subs.

Re: True Grit
have not seen Colin Firth in "the kings speech"-but if he gives a better performance than Jeff Bridges it must be very good.
Atmosphere created for the old west was totally consistent throughout the film which lived up to its title it displayed true grit.
This is very different to the John Wayne Katherine Hepburn version which was also an excellent film-so go and experience this film-you will be glad you did.
