It's different alright... Hepburn was in the sequel "Rooster Cogburn" and not in "True Grit"!

Saw this tonight and was blown away by it. Far far better than I was expecting, both from an acting point of view and a cinematography point of view. Some of the scenes were just breathtaking. Also with modern special effects it was far more realistic than the original.
I, too, wondered about the quirky bits - the guy who made the animal noises and the kids getting kicked around. Never really explained, but well funny.
I could not believe when I saw the credits that Le Boef had been played by Matt Damon - never recognised him for a second!

So glad that weirdfilms33 got in to see it (despite being too young) would have been a real shame if he'd been turned away. Go on, my son! Lol.

The sound effect guy was taken from the book, apparently.
The kids getting kicked around was satire based on the Old West's (and its presentation in the classical Western's - including (or especially) those of John Wayne) racially problematic subtext. It was like how LaBoeuf (and the rest of the characters) treated Mattie was very much influenced by the fact that she was a girl and she was a child. It's all part of this archaic ideology that the film is subverting but also, to a degree, not excluding from its nostalgia.

I just thought the the noisy guy was playing on words with Rooster being a chicken... but I cant remember if there have been noises other than chicken

I also saw this last night and echo Stuartboy's comments above - it was outstanding, and massively exceeded my expectations even as a fan of the Coen brothers. The description of it as a 'Western' almost dismisses it by restricting it to a genre. It really belongs more closely with No Country For Old Men in its portrayal of a brilliantly portrayed and gripping pursuit of a criminal and the dangers that come along on the way.[spoiler][/spoiler]

Saw this at a packed Southampton Odeon. Been looking forward to this film for ages and was'nt disappointed,brilliant from start to finish.

Complete farce at the Vue West End tonight. Understood a bit more of Bridges dialogue this time, possibly due to having read the book a couple of days before. Still my favourite film so far this year.

Thankfully I can say that my visit to the Odeon Sheffield was not like kevinknapman!! Despite the Odeon being a very small cinema compared to the others in Sheffield I had no problem getting a seat (at the front as I usually prefer because the seats aren't tiered in the screen where they normally show the previews during the week). I noted that the member of staff taking our tickets was making a note of the numbers going in but I don't know whether any people were turned away (I hope not). The film was great (as I expected it to be with the cast involved). I agree totally with the comment above about Jeff Bridges' dialogue. An excuse for it of course would be that he was being true to a character from that era and chewing tobacco but I am not sure I can let them off totally for that!! I noticed that Domhnall Gleeson was in it briefly. He seems to be getting some decent (if small) roles in big films. Hailee Steinfeld is certainly one to watch. I am not normally one to watch westerns but would recommend it to anyone who is interested.
