Re: Rio
Oh and the lady was going on and on about how Ice Age (1) was being streamed live on the Times webstite at 5pm tomorrow. I was thinking, "I'm not waiting THAT long to watch that."

Re: Rio
But it's a fantastic film. If I remember and the streaming can cope with my slow connection, I might do it.

Re: Rio
I was pretty disappointed that the screening was held in screen 2 at the Empire today. The film was nothing special. It was colourful but everything else was average. It's not particularly smartly written and it didn't seem to get much of a response from the children there either. The songs were pretty rubbish, especially the auto-tuned Rio one early on and then during the credits. Oh and Jesse Eisenberg shoudln't do voice-over work. He's not suited for it at all. 6/10
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: Rio
Watched Rio today at the O2. I'm still feeling sick from the popcorn.
I liked the film, but some stuff annoyed me. Some translations weren't right and there was only one guy with a Brazilian accent (the ornithologist). The story was predictable, but that was expected anyway. 7.5/10

Re: Rio
Oh my goodness. What an average film this is. There's nothing unique here at all. A few years ago I recall complaining about product placement in Casino Royale. Rio takes it to a whole new level. It's like a gigantic advert put out by the Rio tourist board. My second issue is there is no unique satisfying emotional payoff. It's a massive Toy Story rip-off. We all know he will fly by the end of the film, but the manner of it was a total forgery. "You're flying", says Woody. Did I say Woody? I meant Jewel, because she used exactly the same line here. It's so easy to get those two mixed up...
And not only was it a Toy Story rip-off, but you saw it coming from a mile off. We didn't have this level of predictability in 1995. Also, Buzz was a toy, Blu was a bird, so it really didn't pack any kind of punch because a bloody bird should bloody well fly. As my eight year old brother put it, "it was okay, but the ending was a bit weak." Couldn't have said it better myself. It just isn't that funny either. I recall laughing twice, and one of those was because of my own memories of a drooling bulldog, so that one was a purely nostalgic laugh.
Perhaps the saddest thing about this film is...I actually preferred Tangled. It was so much more charming, and it didn't rely on throwing in loads and loads of new characters making stupid noises to be, at times, reasonably amusing. And Tangled wasn't even that good.
I don't hate Rio. But I certainly don't love it.

Re: Rio
Very formulaic and very average. Yes it was colourful but that was about it really and the 3D animation was mostly non-existent. Pretty soon, people are just going to complain about rip off 3D ticket prices and there will be a backlash.
The storyline itself is like countless other animated films, be true to yourself, get lost in a foreign environment etc, even learning how to fly? Toy Story anyone?
I can just visualise the big studio exec at Fox going, hey lets just change to a fancier location (make it Rio!), lets change the character/animal (make it a bright blue Macaw!). Even the animation for the Linda character looks familiar, I am thinking isn't she drawn like a character in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs or some recent animated film.
The animators in Hollywood tried to do something different with things like Despicable Me and Megamind, but Rio feels like it's gone back to their old trusty formula. The songs in this film were more like an after thought
It's probably going to do well given animated films with big marketing is almost critic proof, but I really struggle to see a storyline for Rio 2.
5.5/10
