Re: Sucker Punch
What. A. Load. Of. Bleep.
I regretted going to the IMAX last week when US reviews came in. Eugh, just, no. Awful. Die. Appalling. It's lazy, loud, incoherent, clumsy and just not a film, it's, it's a 13 year old's fantasy, without their originality.

Re: Sucker Punch
I quite liked it, some of the effects were very impressive. The first fight was visually stunning, stunning backdrop and colours. The scene in the trenches was good, I wasn't crazy about the dragon scene though. I think the middle of the film feels repetitive, it would have been interesting to see a different character fly the plane or helicopter. The others apart from Babydoll and the two sisters weren't given a chance to tell their stories. Some more depth regarding the characters would have been nice. The soundtrack was top notch and reply enhanced the battle scenes, will look into b*ying it, that's how much I enjoyed it. Overall I think it appeals to video game fans as it looked and felt like a crazy mix of FF, CoD, God of War, LotR and Resident Evil.

Re: Sucker Punch
I'm with you there boys, i took a bunch of twelve year olds and i wish i hadn't. Feel like i corrupted their innocence just by taking them, i was horrified!!pattyloz wrote:Yes, Stuartboy, you are right! I thought it was ridiculous that they were allowed to go in because clearly that movie is NOT for 5s and 6s but what I thought it was even more ridiculous is the fact that the parents were taking them! A 7 or 8 year old kid was sitting beside my friend and he seemed to be in a chatatonic state! Poor thing ... Parents should be more careful. Management have to let them in if they are taken by their parents, I think.

The start seemed promising (abeit traumatic) and the angle thread, if played right, could have captivated me. Instead what we got was a video game showreel. Repetitive YES. Didn't care enough about the characters to shed a tear when they all copped it but interestingly the twelve year olds did. Uncomfortable watching it with them in the whore house scenes. Shame on the bbc classificasts.

Re: Sucker Punch
i think it earns points for originality, though, in one respect. its the one of the few films I've recently seen that attempts to create and then meld entirely different 'world genres' with each other. In this aspect it reminds me remotely of some films I saw in the 80s as a kid and the 90s (as a bigger kid) before hi def CGI, such as Crossworlds (a 'better' Rutger Hauer movie lol) and the 'House' series of movies (nothing to do with Hugh Laurie, young uns lol. The first two of which are great fun horror where the protagonists frequently 'teleport' to other time zones and locations by sheer dint of a magical house they just moved into. i used to watch a lot of movies like that...). But in Sucker Punch this is the first time this year I've seen two 'worlds' entirely fused together at the simultaneously on the screen.
Pity then that the film didnt equate to the work done on its rendered dream worlds.

Re: Sucker Punch
Saw this movie at Shepherd's Bush, there were 2 girls dressed as characters from the movie taking pictures with people queuing to see the movie, or rather begging people to takes pics with them. The one with the black hair was pouting really hard during taking said pics, it was so funny when someone needed a few minutes to take their pic as the camera was not cooperating, poor girl had to pout during the whole time
I thought she might get a sore lip or sth.

Re: Sucker Punch
sorry, this film was so awful, i can't bring myself to give it any points other than for the sound track.... the fact that I spent more time wondering who recorded the original or what songs made up the mash than what was going on on the screen says it all. Great fan of 300 and Watchmen but this was just fetishists crap wrapped up in an overlong pop video. Utter drivel, avoid.
Re: Sucker Punch
this movie honestly was such a waste of time n i probably walked out with 10 IQ points lower than when i walked in! but yeah, the only way i can justify going to the movie not having been a complete waste was hearing emily browning's version of sweet dreams. (still not enough to make this movie worth it, but well at least it was better than having walked out with a completely wasted experience)
Re: Sucker Punch
Acutually, don't quite understand it until I take a few minutes back to think about the film.

Re: Sucker Punch
Finally saw this at the IMAX last night thanks to tickets won through thefancarpet.com, following several missed opportunities, including the premiere. I had avoided this thread but still couldn't help but come across the negativity towards this film. Personally, I think it's undeserved. Sure, it's not a classic masterpiece, but I found it really enjoyable for what it was. The opening sequence was beautifully shot and did a fantastic job of setting the tone. I thought the soundtrack was brilliant and fit the film really well. The rendered worlds and characters looked phenomenal. I did find the samurai to be very cool, indeed. I suppose I wasn't too bothered by all that representing her fantasy world. I think it's wrong to say it should definitely be this way or that way. If one doesn't find it believable, that's fine but I find it a difficult argument to make that something shouldn't be in another person's (or character's) head.
The acting was fine enough, but I agree that Emily Browning certainly could have been more emotive. Perhaps that's what Snyder was going for. It is a bit odd that the audience never sees the slightest bit of dancing from Baby Doll. I think the occasional flashcut from the fantasy within the fantasy, back to the fantasy showing her mid-dance could have worked well if used properly. I didn't find the cast to be anything spectacular, even in the eye-candy category. I would have preferred the original choice of Amanda Seyfried easily (though my OH apparently was a little too happy with Emily Browning being in it). Jon Hamm was dreadfully under-used.
The ending was a bit deflating to me, but I understand the reasoning for it. The musical number during the credits was interesting, but it seemed pretty random.
I'd say for me this was hit & miss, but when it did hit, I found it greatly entertaining and it was a pleasure to watch, even if the story was a bit wtf-ish. However, I also think Scott Pilgrim vs The World was a highlight of 2010. So, whatever. 7.5/10 from me.

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.
