And this was funny, sweet, sad, poignant, farcical etc. And with good acting across the board. More like this please.
"without crudity"?

I have to disagree with this. And with just about all of the reviews.

In my view, this terribly unfunny and generally abysmal film relies heavily on pathetic crudity. For example, someone walks in on someone masturbating. A ha ha, how very droll! Now that's very funny and has never been thought of before has it?

Have you seen films like The Hangover II, Bridesmaids or The Change-Up recently? THEY are crude. The above mentioned scene doesn't even come near that.

I have to agree. It may perhaps not be completely innocent, but then compared to what people deem normal these days and all the other things you see in movies CSL is not crude at all.

Saw this at Greenwich last night. Thought it was excellent. Great performances all around and a few nice twists and turns. Very enjoyable. 9/10.

i enjoyed the movie, it was lighthearted and funny, but i wouldnt say it was an excellent or an outstanding movie or that the performances were spectacular..it was just above average for me.
I do love Ryan Gosling - was going to see whats your number on monday but might see Drive instead just to see him again :p heehee 6/10

No I have not seen those films, because from what I've heard, they appear to me to be severely lacking in content and wit. Life is too short for me to give them a chance. I am only interested in seeing good films. I went to see this one on the basis of a personal recommendation, despite the fact that I would normally have great reservations about spending time watching the majority of mainstream comedies. I don't tend to use mainstream films as a benchmark because I think that they are mostly bad and I hope for more from cinema. I feel that this is besides the point. Whether or not this film is "without crudity" is not dictated by whether or not other films exist that are more crude, but by whether it actually is crude itself.

Crude is a word with multiple meanings. Two examples below.
1) Characterized by uncultured simplicity; lacking in sophistication or subtlety
2) Lacking tact or taste; blunt or offensive.
So basically the main definitions of crude as understand it are (1) unsophisticated, or (2) cheap sexual and scatological content.

In my view there was not a single piece of wit in the film. Every single attempt at a joke made me cringe, as I felt that it insulted my intelligence as an audience member so much. Therefore, I regard the entire film to be crude under the definition of its lack of sophistication or genuine humour. In addition a very large proportion of the film relied upon cheap sexual/scatological content. The above mentioned example is basically a joke about how wanking is embarrassing and funny. If that's not crude in both senses, then I don't know what is. Another example, a man stands in a position with his penis in the face of another male character (the head of whom obstructs the audience's view of the penis). A ha ha!!! My sides are splitting at this incredibly funny and original scenario!!! What incredible mind produced this piece of comedy genius? Its a penis, and penis' are very, very funny!!!

The term crude does not always need to be an insult. For me, a film like The Guard could easily be considered crude base upon its sexual content, swearing, etc. I would however argue that it is a beautifully written film with wit, and emotional resonance that are both sadly lacking in the inane Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Sorry, it's crude maybe by 1950s standards, but is quite mild in our modern world. CSL goes for some visual gags, but aside from the contrived graduation scene, is very well written and performed. Obviously, you disagree with that but to chalk it up to being crude strikes me as silly. The aforementioned scene was not meant to be totally hilarious. It was meant to be awkward and is used to establish the characters and story between them. There was nothing graphic about it and is for the most part implied. That a teenage boy should be doing that is his own room is in no way crude and I don't personally understand why you've decided to attach that word to it.

It's totally fine if you didn't like the film. To each their own. However to bang on about this film being some sort of crude cinematic failure is way off the mark in 2011.

C'mon sf -- is it really necessary to call people 'silly' because they have a different view point than you? This is really not helpful (or polite). And as for 'banging on' about things -- well lots of people bang on about things and I don't see you making similar comments.

There are obvious different levels of crudeness and to be fair i thought the movie was a bit crude. I didnt like the scene where jessica gives Robbie a picture of herself (obvious a nude one)-thats just wrong, if was only 14...maybe im old fashioned and a prude, but that just aint right!

Wow. You're starting on me again? I didn't call anyone silly. I would recommend that you re-read what is written before jumping on everything I say.
