Re: Margin Call
I think you got off lightly. Islington was completely overheated and we had to ask the usher to turn it down, which she (or someone) actually did.
This was so boring. I believe the bloke next to me fell asleep. I have seen Inside Job which is a brilliant documentary about what caused the financial crisis. This here was a proper film with lots of stars like Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bethany and Zachary Quinto, and yet it failed to deliver on every level. I found it hilarious that twice in the movie people were asked to "speak plain English as you would to a child or a Golden Retriever" which was obviously done for the benefit of the viewer, but it didn't help at all - still went way over my head.
People get laid off, some employee suddenly discovers how bad the financial situation is via a strange programme someone developed, crisis meetings are held, Stanley Tucci looks meaningful, politics are played and everyone tries to cover their arse. The film ends with Kevin Spacey burying his dog.
What a barrel of laughs. Should have gone to Goon instead.
5/10

Financial type people earn a bucket load of money. That's the sum total of what I got from this film (oh, and Demi Moore got OLD... oh the days of Disclosure)

Same, I whinged about the late start, lights coming up early, the talkers and the rustlers.
Oh and I love the light sabre type car park barriers.
I gave it an 8/10

Re: Margin Call
Cliveas and KK as usual wrote a lengthy review too. I enjoyed reading them too, pity.
My main positives about the film were the splendid performances, no one hammed it up apart from Jeremy Irons who was justifiably a tad hammy since he played the big boss. The story was mainly about moral ambiguity and making decisions to either save yourself, the company or the market. Sure there was a lot of financial jargon but that was there for authenticity, not for us to actually understand. When I watch Star Trek, I havent a clue what Scotty or Geordie is rambling about, it doesnt matter. This was a riveting drama and it was fascinated all the way through. Loved the ending too. It made me think a lot about how all of us are so dependant on the market yet most of us havent a clue. Its quite scary really.
Oh the redundancy scene at the beginning felt like deja vu. Being taken out of my office (half written email on the screen). A HR woman telling it to me straight. While another takes the helpful sympathetic approach, kind of like a good cop bad cop routine. Being escorted by a guard on my exit and as I was an IT administrator with access to all servers and files, they had to ensure I had no communications with them. Exactly as in the film. Perhaps some of you have that experience too, its a rather funky trend
This makes a great start to my new year at the cinemas :)
