Re: The Help
the audience is always a problem when you go to cinema unfortunately!
my worst experiences recently were at Drive and at What's Your Number, for very different reasons!
I was not shocked/annoyed by tonight reactions to The Help though...

Re: The Help
I didn't see them as jokes but just some funny, heartfelt moments. It is obviously not your type of film, and I value your views, which I read with interest.RioBravo wrote:Actually, that's one of my big beefs with these earnest middle brow dramas. They always have this terrible broad comedy in them. There were tonnes of attempts at jokes, it doesn't matter if it wasn't a comedy, when there are loads of unfunny jokes and the audience is laughing away at the word shit, its a very alienating experiences.Celini wrote:errrr, this was no supposed to be a comedy

Re: The Help
I think that my issue with that was that it seemed as though it was played for laughs in a way. An awful lot of her character was played that way in this emotional rollercoaster of a film. I didn't feel any directorial skill at hand when the tone shifted from humour to more dramatic stuff, but I didn't find any of the humour funny, nor any of the drama dramatic, so it wasn't really going to work for me.funthing29 wrote:This is actually completely understandable.RioBravo wrote: Surely noone can justify the 'comedy' of the fat one going insane and grabbing a stick to attack Jessica Chastain's husband, just because he drove up his own drive way?
Up to this point in the film, Minny had not met Cynthia's husband so when a white man approaches a black woman with an offer to help, it is logical that she would be frightened for her safety.

Re: The Help
I saw this at Southport Vue last night, a bit of a trek for me but well worth it. Everyone was also I.D'd here last night, I had given my friends my son's competition win printout as he didn't want to go, they had arrived at the cinema before me and the cinema manager wouldn't let them in because they had no matching ID. Good job I thought to throw his bank card in my bag just before I left home. Once we were seated the staff came around and handed out our goodie bag which was very nice.
I've really been wanting to watch this film. Having read the book recently and from seeing the trailers I couldn't quite get my head around Emma Stone being cast as Skeeter Phelan, but was I proved wrong. She played an amazing role, and had got her characteristics down to a T. I loved this film and so did my daughter and friends. We found it an emotional and gripping story, also funny in places, the 2 hours and 20 minutes flew by.
There are a few plot holes that will be better explained by reading the book, I suppose that they had to make cuts somewhere, but I found that they didn't detract from the story too much. The only dissapointment for me was the telling of Constantine's story, it was told much better and in greater detail in the book in my opinion. I won't say anymore because i don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book/seen the film.
One of my favourite films this year. 9/10
