The Help

#1 Post by hopeprince » Tue Apr 19, 2011 1:51 pm

Its a book turned into a film and its about Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) is an African-American maid who has often offended her employers despite her family's struggles with money and her desperate need for jobs; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone) is a young white woman who has recently moved back home after graduating from college to find out her childhood maid has mysteriously disappeared. These three stories intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help"; yet they are always kept at a certain distance because of racial lines.

This looks awesome and the fact i read the book for an assignment before. Viola Davis is amazing as always, and I'll see anything with Emma Stone in it. :P

I was lucky enough to see this film at big screen. After reading the book i was delighted to see how enjoyable it all played out on screen, Emma Stone (a personal favourite of mine) was brilliant for the role of Skeeter Phelan. Great performances also came from that of Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis. The film was additionally more hilarious then expected, it's only slightly unfortunate that it could not be as informative as the book. 8/10

Looking forward to this now! Might give the book a go if I can find it.

Octavia Spencer absolutely steals the show. I loved this. I'll write up something properly in the next day or two, but this was magnificent. Bryce Dallas Howard's performance is spectacular as well. The one drawback is that it's a bit longer than it needs to be and is a bit slow going at first. While I enjoyed Crazy, Stupid, Love more as entertainment (and it's definitely GREAT entertainment) this was a better film, so 9.5/10 from me.

I said that I could see it as a nom for best film of the year for the Academy Awards. It's incredibly well performed and they generally love to recognise films like this. However, I have since discovered that it is steeped in a a fair bit of controversy over there regarding what has been deemed as racist depictions of black women and men at the time. So regardless of how good or well-intentioned the film is, that may well sink it's chances beyond some best supporting actress nods (which it definitely deserves).
