Re: Love and Other Drugs
To those people I'd told that I would be seeing this tonight at Apollo - I got tickets for a free members preview at Picturehouse Greenwich on Sunday so will most likely be seeing it then instead.

Congrats miss_indigo! Another FMUK baby on the way.miss_indigo wrote:I saw this at the Odeon, Shaftesbury Avenue last night with my sister and we LOVED it. Funny and poignant. Anne Hathaway was excellent in this and I certainly laughed out loud a few times.
A solid 8/10 from me and I am glad to be back in the 'free films fold' after months of horrific pregnancy sickness!

Saw this tonight in Taunton - small screen and only about 1/3 full. When we arrived the queue was throught the foyer and we thought we wouldn't get seats!
Funny, clever, and agree with others - good acting from Anne.

Re: Love and Other Drugs

The screen is about half empty. Maybe due to the weather.
7/10. ok but would not p*y to watch...a bit predictable...

Re: Love and Other Drugs
Slightly annoying time at the Odeon Kingston earlier. They left us waiting in a queue until 18.40 before letting us into the screen. Film finally started 20 mins late. And I was sat two seats away from an incredibly obnoxious bloke who made random comments through the film, fidgeted a lot especially towards the end and was clearly embarrassing his wife/girlfriend.
The film itself was okay. Admittedly it did feel like two movies for the price of one. A true story type drama about the beginnings of Viagra from the point of view of a sales rep bolted onto a romantic comedy. They didn't entirely gel and as the film went on the romantic comedy aspect started to overwhelm the drama until the rather scmaltzy and cliched 'rush to get the girl back' type ending. So despite the use of nudity and the character with Parkinson's it still felt like a fairly conventional rom-com by the end.
Thankfully the central performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were excellent and made up for any confusion about what type of film it was. There was good support from Oliver Platt and Hank Azaria too. Although like The Next Three Days this is another film that wastes the acting talents of two fine Hollywood actors. George Segal and Jill Clayburgh (who died last month) sadly only getting a single scene.
Which made the presence of one of 2010's worst supporting performances even more of a crime. The Jack Black-a-like who played Jake's brother almost ruined the movie for me. A misjudged role that felt completely pointless. The film could have easily existed without that character and would have been much better.
Love & Other Drugs is not a great movie but it has enough to recommend it (Not least the use of a Billy Bragg & Wilco track in a montage sequence). Just try and ignore THAT character.

biggins wrote:Saw this tonight at Westerhailes and surprised at how full it was. A lot of latecomers who all seemed to want to sit in our row or the one in front of us - most annoying.
The film was better than I had thought with all the comments about the nudity. A few laughs but some sombre scenes too. 6/10
Must admit I never noticed the latecomers. Did notice the phone go off and nobody switched it off. I was astonished at the blatant amout of branding that was used - all the drug names were genuine and used their commercial names. How much do you think Pfizer contributed to the costs of the film? Surely it would have worked just as well with a fictional company name?
I have to admit I nodded off about 3/4 through the film. Must have missed about 5 minutes but made no difference! I felt whole thing was overly long, and the premise of the drawn out efforts to gain sales and ingratiate doctors was stretch beyond its limit.
5/10 (maybe it's cos I is a bloke)

Re: Love and Other Drugs
Saw it at the apollo last night as well. Cute love story with a more serious twist, beautiful people to look at and a killer soundtrack...7/10
Re: Love and Other Drugs
Never made it last night as the traffic was so bad I spent most of the evening on the bus and had to give up in the end. Oh well -- at least I wasn't one of those annoying people coming in late and then asking people to move seats so I could have the best view.

Re: Love and Other Drugs
No code in the Guardian today though (just a previously posted code for The King's Speech) which is where Picturehouses previews usually turn up.Beate wrote:Picturehouses do free member's previews this Sunday so with a bit of luck an SFF code will come out for that.
