With regards the ending, Nolan just does whatever he feels like.
[spoiler]A lot of it came from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, which is built up the same way: Batman's going to die, Batman's going to die, Batman's going to - gotcha, he doesn't really die. Except the execution in that comic is a lot more nuanced. With Nolan it's literally just a plot device as two-dimensional as described above. There's no meaning to it other than he didn't feel like killing off Batman.
The Robin thing isn't to extend the franchise. It's lip-service for the fans.[/spoiler]

The Dark Knight Rises the most EPIC of stories hampered by the format of film, it has Epic first quarter, a saggy middle followed by the most Epic of Epic endings in the history of Epicness.

That’s what my FaceBook status said after seeing Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises his final chapter in his Dark Knight Trilogy. But of course that does not tell the whole story. Here are some light weight thoughts, that will be followed by a more in depth analysis when enough people have seen it for a proper post not to be considered spoilerish. Also bear in mind that I have only seen The Dark Knight Rises once typically Chris Nolan’s film need to be seen at least twice to absorb the detail.

I am not the biggest Chris Nolan fan but I loved Batman Begins despite some of its flaws it the greatest comic to screen film we have. I loved Inception and it was a turning point for me as I really began to appreciate Nolan’s work but he has his work cut out for him with The Dark Knight Rises. In Batman Begins he had the untold story of Batman’s origin to fall back on, sure he brought a lot to it and it was a cinematic triumph. With The Dark Knight he had two Batman wildcards up his sleeve (The Joker and Two Face) to fall back on as Batman hits his golden period stride, but with The Dark Knight Rises Nolan has to cover way too much in a single 164 min film as it proves to be his most ambitious work yet.

I usually complain when studios split stories into two halves but here is a case in point where the story would have benefited from being split into two shorter films. The impact of trying to cover too much over such a short time really has detrimental effects, particularly on the middle of the film which cries out for more in-depth characterisation and emotion like a fatherless psycho on top of a bridge.

Sky don't seem to concerned with the issues at Uxbridge last night. They emailed me this after I made a complaint.

Thank you for your email. We have now spoken to Odeon and it would appear that because the satellite feed was unable to be fed into Uxbridge (due to technical limitations at Uxbridge), the cinema took it upon itself to schedule a film that ended later than it should have.

We have relayed yours and our dissatisfaction with the mix-up and have received an apology back from Odeon who assure us it will not happen again.

On this occasion as this was a premiere screening, all screens were booked and briefed by the film studio, Warner. Warner also booked and briefed security on this occasion.

From our side we're very sorry that you were left waiting and that Uxbridge felt disorganised.

I must admit I was one of the people clapping at the end of the screening at the o2...I was a rather excited fanboy last night. According to my wife I was a babbling wreck on the phone to her trying to desribe how amazing I thought it was...she couldn't stop laughing!

It's okay, you were not alone in your sentiments! I personally just didn't get the hype in this case but I have clapped at other screenings in the past.

I can understanding clapping at premiere/talent screening because people involved the film are there and it is a sign of appreciation, but to do it at a regional premiere or free screening, I just don't get it.

Just a sign of appreciation and a sign that you enjoyed it. It's like cheering at the screen watching football if your team are playing, they can't hear you but you get carried away :) or something to that effect.

reminds me, we used to get clapping at the end of med school lectures in year 1.

freaking bizarre, clapping for a snoozefest that you pa*d for. So I wouldnt put it past regional premieres.
