Re: Tatsumi
Went to see Tatsumi at Hampstead Everyman this afternoon. First time at the Everyman, very nice indeed.
When we arrived at 11.30am, we were given tickets (which allowed for one free drink, soft or coffee) and told to come back at 12 noon when the doors opened. At 12 noon a few people, including myself and my friend were picked out to enter first, then we found out why as we were told where to sit, as they needed people in the background in the lounge area for the presenter to present in front of for Al-Jazeera TV! So we missed the free sandwiches downstairs in the lounge which the rest of the attendees went to. Anyway, after the film and before the Q&A, there was a short break, which we then managed to grab some of the sandwiches off the small tray which were actually in the lounge where we were being the background earlier. We were all then ushered back into the screening room for the Q&A with the Director Eric Khoo.
The film was very interesting although very, very bleak. The director chose five stories from Tatsumi's short stories and intermingled them with some bio of Tatsumi's life. The Q&A was just as interesting, the director is extremely knowledgeable and we learnt that he was a comic book artist before being a director, and was inspired to do an animation film by Tatsumi's autobiographical book. He also wanted to p*y a tribute to Tatsumi and the film was also a gift to him for his 75th birthday. A couple of the stories were quite risqué and could have cost them an 18 Certificate in Singapore, as if they got the 21 Certificate (a Singaporean Certificate only) meant it cannot be released on DVD, and which of course would not be a good thing for their profits!
