This Must Be The Place
Does perfection exist?
Well, as far as movies are concern I now believe it does! Thank so much (very very much) to Turtle who invited me to "This must be the place" tonight;
I am still a bit gob-smacked and don't really know where to start!
You know the feeling, when you have all those ideas in your head and you're still incapable to form a proper sentence! (at least, this is how my brain works!)
For me this movie ticked all the boxes; the acting (both lead and supporting) was brilliant, script, screenplay, direction, editing, soundtrack... fantastic.
Best of all, I think, was actually the camera work (and I am really not at all into this kind of nerdy thing normally); the stuff was so good that it was sometimes distracting!
You got my point, I am in love with this movie, I shall see it again soon!
10+/10
edit: just remembered to mention the wide angle shots (both indoor and outdoor)... gorgeous!

Re: London Film Festival 2011
I actually realised that I did not even mention the story!
The story was alright I guess but I like the first half (or was it only 30 minutes?) better; when you just follow Cheyenne in his everyday life!
Lots of touching characters and few WTF laughing moments.

YES!
One of my favourites of the festival, saw it so long ago in comparison that even I thought it slipped through the net when I found it was finally screening tonight, a corker of a film, can't wait to catch it again. Cinematically gorgeous.

And Sean Penn showed again what a heck of an actor he is! A very original "road movie", will most definitely see it again 9/10EthanRunt wrote:YES!

Re: London Film Festival 2011
I really loved This Must Be The Place too; amazing camera work and soundtrack, stellar performances all around. The only thing that left a little to be desired was the actually storyline imho. With the introduction (before the main arc of the road trip) lasting far too long and there being plenty of things that seemed to have been put in merely because they look good (for instance nearly the entire performance on stage with the girl tilted sideways behind the band - while visually appealing it didn't serve the storyline and made the movie unnecessarily long).
I was also left with a million questions after the film had finished:
- What's Cheyenne's relationship to Mary, Tony and their mum?
- How does his wife feel about his new "look"?
- What happened when he had to return the jeep?
- What happened to Tony?
- Mary and Desmond? (from her last call it sounded like it didn't work out which would've been a shame and I would've liked to see more from Desmond's perspective as he was quite present in the first half of the movie)
- Did they ever get water in the pool???
Overall though the movie was very good and the beautiful look and music surely distracted from its weaknesses.
8/10

Re: London Film Festival 2011
This is really funny because for me the best part of the movie was actually before the road trip and I loved the scene in the club… but then again I didn't care much about the story line, I was just too much intoxicated by the cinematography and I was living in Cheyenne's world for 2 hours!
best 3 scenes for me:
- the red telephone cord
- Cheyenne and the kitchen knives
- the final meeting in the trailer
When Cheyenne appeared at the end all cleaned up, my first thought was he was actually Toby!
That would have fit with most of the other things… only problem, his mother would be way too young!
So I was wondering whether Toby would just be another depressed goth teenager that disappeared; and that would be how Mary and Cheyenne met. When he comes back all cleaned up at the end, the mother is hopeful again, Cheyenne is alright, her son might be alright as well and come back at some point?
I know it's very far fetched

I too liked the telephone bit but also very much loved the unexpected funny moments (the pierced milk carton, the truck catching fire, etc).

I think that was the whole point - because the mother thought this too. But I agree agewise it would be impossible. For a while I also thought Tony might have been his son from a previous marriage/relationship, until later on in the film he said he never had kids and felt like he missed out.
That's when he was in the kitchen with the goose trying to blow his cover. The composition there was excellent.canadian_turtle wrote: The kitchen knives? I don't remember what that was![]()
