Love Is All You Need

#1 Post by ISMADDER » Mon Feb 18, 2013 5:53 pm

LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED is a warm, funny, heartfelt meditation on the birth pangs of starting a new life. Set at a picture-perfect summer wedding in Sorrento, the film stars Pierce Brosnan as Philip, a lonely, middle-aged English widower and estranged single father living in Denmark, and Trine Dyrholm as Ida, a Danish hairdresser recuperating from chemotherapy, who has just learned that her husband is leaving her for a woman half his age from his accounts department. The fates of these two bruised souls intertwine as they embark for Italy to attend the wedding of his son, Patrick, to her daughter, Astrid. The bumpy path towards the union of their children, and the clashes and faux pas of their wedding guests, force Philip and Ida to reevaluate all their notions of family, love and happiness. Filmed on beautiful locations in Italy and Denmark, LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED is an uplifting tale of love, loss, absurdity and humour that will leave only the hardest heart untouched. It is a film about the simple yet profound pains and joys of moving on - and forward - with your life. LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED reunites the Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winning team of director Susanne Bier and writer Anders Thomas Jensen for the fifth time, following Open Hearts (2002), Brothers (2004), Academy Award® nominee After the Wedding (2007) and Golden Globe® and Academy Award® winner In A Better World (2010).

This is an atypical Susanne Bier film, a light mainstream romantic comedy. So quite different from her usual more morally complex films like Brothers and In a Better World. Albeit one with a central character who is recovering from breast cancer and the resulting masectomy. Oddly it can almost be seen as a variation on Mamma Mia! minus the singing. Partly due to the presence of Pierce Brosnan but also because of the wedding plot and the picturesque coastal setting. Quite a nice film though, with a great central performance from Trine Dyrholm, if perhaps lacking the weight Bier's films usually have.

It was missing Pierce's delightful singing voice, and as such becomes nothing more than adequate viewing.

Still sounds like a welcome change from all the current thud and blunder, e.g. Welcome To The Punch, Trance, etc.

It sounds promising for the next preview date, then! I so wanted to see this and a kind fairy had booked me a ticket for this morning, but I felt so guilty about the backlog of things I had to do because of being away for a couple of days and about spending time indoors on such a lovely, sunny day, that I forced myself to forego the film. By Tuesday evening I should however have earned it.
