Everest
Saw this today at Westfield, in 3D in their extreme screen.
Which is interesting as the film has been advertised as 18th sept release for weeks now.
But as odeon started advertising they have it a week early, 11th sept, I'm sure vue/empire/everyone secured it on said date!
Anyways the 3D effect is not that good, was waiting for a good over pan over the summit/ridge but only had one good pan with 3Dlens flare.
The vistas looked fab tho!
And the sound took its time to hit properly but when it eventually did, it hit hard.
Shame Westfield only have 7.1sound, I'll have to check out the dolby ATMOS next week at empire as this week they only have it in 7.1 ...??
The acting was okay but didn't really root for kera, I know it has to follow the true story but loads wrong with the actions of the crew, (they should of read "into the void" book in 96right?)
I'll give it a 6

Re: Everest
Saw this at the O2 superscreen on Friday, having only seen a trailer that implied it was some bland disaster/survival movie that just happened to have an astonishingly good cast.
I was surprisingly blubbing by the end, watching things play out in an act three that smartly tones down any cinematic tropes for matter-of-fact framing of horrors, perfectly plays against the light but interesting ambition drama of the first 80 minutes.
Not a performance awry in the cast, not a shot wrong in the film, beautifully composed throughout and with stunningly intricate 3D work. The textures of cliff faces, the shape of peaks in aerial shots, detailed and enveloping.
A magnificent film, a total surprise, and a great use of Hawkes, Clarke, Watson and Brolin.

Re: Everest
Please don't throw me off the forum but I pa*d to see this yesterday in Imax 3D, nearly £20,
the pain eased somewhat by the Meerkat Movie code I got from akh43
I thought it was spectacular and gripping stuff and let the situation create the tension and excitement rather than over dramatise or Hollywoodise the events.
It also seemed very even handed, reading afterwards there is much debate about what actually happened and the movie seems to say no one person or incident was solely to blame.
A word of warning for anyone planning to see it who doesn't know all the story, don't listen to last week's Kermode Film podcast as Jason Clarke basically gives away every plot point in the space of his 10 minute interview. 8/10

Re: Everest
I went in expecting something spectacular. Some reviews had mentioned Gravity as a comparison.
So disappointed. Wasn't expecting too much in terms of script or plot, but was expecting some special visuals.
What I got was some cgi sweep shots of the Himalayas and lots and lots of obvious studio shot scenes, reminiscent of the cinematography of Crossroads (the soap).
poor /10
...mum loved it.
ps went Friday night, screen had capacity of approx 600...there were 8 of us there.

So I booked at Cineworld Haymarket, found out it was in the crappy small theatre downstairs

I was thoroughly confused with the amount of people going up and down, who was in which team etc. I guess that was what its like with so many people now p*ying to do the climb. Pointless 3D and some really bad dialogue that the women at home had to say

Re: Everest
Watched last night I was surprised that only about 15 people in the largest cinema screen - very empty for a new release.
Overall a good film and great acting, it's based on what actually happened regarding the disaster to group of climbers in 1996. A bit disappointed about the 3 D effects expect more spectacular visual effects.
I don't understand why people risking their own lives and others for it. In the film the climbers were asking each other "why do you do this?" and none of them gave very convincing answers.

Re: Everest
I saw it on last sunday with only four other people. I saw it in 3D and it was very good visually but I believe the 3D wasn't the reason for that.

Re: Everest
in IMAX it feels like the approach of a hurricane.
slim story that was well told, extreme special effects.
4 stars from me, mum gave it the equivalent of 5 stars (though she didn't notice we were in imax).

Re: Everest
Saw this on a recent trip to Manchester at the Printworks. Impressed with the cinema there and used my times 2 for 1 on the Saturday night so that made the evening reasonable.
I enjoyed the story and the scenery but all the way through I just kept thinking why.... would you risk your life to tackle this mountain. The life's lost each year out weigh the achievement especially the sherpas that risk their lives for probably not much money although what the climbers p*y to do this maybe they do earn more.
Anyway saying that, I was kept engrossed through out and was glad I had seen it.

A great story around the unfortunate events that happened. I liked the various characters that were portrayed. Great scenic shots and action. 8.5/10. I'm really enjoying the 'Based on true events' films!
