War Dogs

#1 Post by stuartboy » Tue Aug 23, 2016 12:11 am

Again I went to see this totally blind - not knowing whether to expect a war movie, nature film or comedy. I have to say that the genre didn't become that obvious as the film progressed. The "based on a true story" didn't even lend a clue particularly when Jonah Hill popped up. There was quite a lot if laughter from the student audience although I didn't find it particularly rib-tickling. Having seen it through I've decided on it being a drama/thriller.
It doesn't outstay it's welcome and there are enough twists to keep attention. I particularly enjoyed the freeze frame voice over narration from the main character.

Worth a watch.

Not as funny as the trailer made it out to be but still an interesting watch. Not sure how much the true life story has been dramatise to make for better entertainment but thought Jonah Hill and Miles Teller worked well together and it was an enjoyable film that could have been so much more. 7/10

Saw this last night in Paisley Showcase which is only 10 mins from home . . .a treat to be so close to home. Strangely we had trailers . . .lots of them! . . .all horror type films so don't think I'll be rushing to see them!
Re War Dogs, I have no memory of the true story so couldn't comment on how much truth to the film. I did find it difficult to see the 2 main characters as being contemporaries as they looked as though there was at least 10 years between them. I wasn't sure in advance what genre this film was as I deliberately don't watch trailers though almost everyone I met yesterday told me they'd seen it advertised on tv. I was prepared for anything! There were a few laughs but definitely not a comedy.
So many films recently have done the same, presenting themselves as comedy in trailers and then folk are disappointed when they discover it's not comedy but a serious film.
I must now investigate the real story and the real characters . . . google here I come!

felt very wolf of wall street, and a good homage to goodfellas, am sure theres even two or three songs from goodfellas in this also, as well as the narration and pauses.

Decent enough movie but I'd have enjoyed it more if I knew it was 100% true because that would have excused the flat parts and the end could have used more of an explanation as I no longer understood their motivations.

I saw it in the Showcase in Glasgow. The usual sticky floors and the bouncy seats. As we entered the cinema the end of Ghostbusters was showing. Things can only get better was my first thought! I thought the film was funny in the funny parts, dragged in other parts but an ok but still wondering why Bradley Cooper's character never got his own back on another character who dissed him.

fake Scorcese but good enough. That laugh though, one too many Jonah. someone in the cinema did an imitation of it when jonah lost millions.

some unbelievable stupidity going on. Was it really all true?

weird how "the terrorist" turned out to be the nicest guy there lol whats going on there?

So there's a lot of Goodfellas, mixed in with Three Kings, Jarhead, Wolf of Wall St etc.

I was vaguely aware of the story, but not enough to be sure about the ending.

"Dramedy" is always a difficult one to pull off - not enough laughs for some people, too flippant for others, but it is well done and worth a watch.

ps - Is there any particular reason for Bradley Cooper's apparent decision to play his role as Bono?
