Went to the Premiere at Odeon Leicester Square. A beautiful film – which dealt with very real themes – such as divorced parents and a mother who has terminal cancer – in a very different way. I have not read the book, so cannot comment on whether it does the book justice or not. The cast was superb – especially young Lewis MacDougall – who was very believable as the bullied boy dealing with his mother’s inevitable death. The monster was frighteningly scary – but, as it later turned out, more in a BFG way, as he only had the well-being of young Conor at heart. I also though it bore some similarities to the Babadook, but you will need to watch the film to see what I mean.
At first I thought it was a children’s film, but having seen it, I would define it as “Nightmare-inducing” for children and really don’t think young children should be encouraged to see it. Aside from the scary CGI monster, the subject-matter (i.e. bullying, divorce and death) was also very dark. 8/10
