Barney’s Version

Directed by Richard J. Lewis.
Starring: Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman, Bruce Greenwood.

Plot: Based on Mordecai Richler's prize-winning comic novel, his last and, arguably, best. Barney's Version is the warm, wise, and witty story of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), a seemingly ordinary man who lives an extraordinary life. A candid confessional, told from Barney's point of view, the film spans four decades and two continents, taking us through the different acts of his unusual history. There is his first wife, Clara (Rachelle Lefevre), a flame-haired, flagrantly unfaithful free sprit with whom Barney briefly lives la vie de Boheme in Rome. The Second Mrs. Panofsky (Minnie Driver), is a wealthy Jewish Princess who shops and talks incessantly, barely noticing that Barney is not listening. And it is at their lavish wedding that Barney meets, and starts pursuing, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), his third wife, the mother of his two children, and his true love. With his father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman) as his sidekick, Barney takes us through the many highs, and a few too many lows, of his long and colorful life. Not only does Barney turn out to be a true romantic, he is also capable of all kinds of sneaky acts of gallantry, generosity, and goodness when we, and he, least expect it. His is a gloriously full life, played out on a grand scale. And, at its center stands an unlikely hero, the unforgettable Barney Panofsky.

I don't think anyone will even be out yet, SH, let alone online. It was a 7.45 pm start for a 132-minute-long film, plus a Q & A. But I'm keen to hear about it, too!

Yes, and a few more, I think, since I also had a pair to pass on; plus there was a further code today.

Sadly not. I got to the Northern Line platform at Leicester Square with just over 30 mins to go and there were 4 Edgware trains but no High Barnet train for almost 20 mins. So I wouldn't have made it on time.

OK, I know it was a late finish but someone, somewhere must have gone to this. What did you think, chaps?

Sorry you missed this KK. For future ref, best to change at Camden for the Barnet branch, as they mostly come via the City branch (hope that makes sense!). :P

It must have been quite underwhelming if no one's reporting back

I was wondering whether to fake my feedback (for the tix I passed on) but don't want to be massively caught out if there was some obvious thing I missed, such as it started late, PG didn't turn up, or something!
