I think it had me when the MGM Lion roared its loudest roar "I aint dead m****f*****s" (sorry I'm referring to the near death of MGM causing this long delay between bond films). Its not the best Bond, nor is it my favourite (which is OHMSS) but its still a great Bond movie. It does actually compare very much to OHMSS in that its more of personal journey type of film. Despite the recent in-thing for superhero movies to go the Nolanesque route (which while has been fantastic, will become stale very soon, if not already), this Bond still delivers the classic Bond traits and fun but rather spaced out in doses. But boy when it does, its done with LOVE baby. I love it when a bond surprise moment is accompanied by the wonderfully nostalgic Daaaaa Da motif. JB was the most deliciously camp bond villain I've seen since Tele Savalas's Blofeld. He was great, although he did strike a Ledger's Jokeresque tone, he was different enough to not be considered a rip-off. He was both funny, psychotic and justifiably highly motivated thanks to a splendid story which I hear is the biggest criticism but I beg to differ. I really liked the story. Its a clever encapsulation of everything about Bond and family. The characters had depth and were performed brilliantly. The opening is a tour de force of Bond doing what he does best with a relentless spectacle of setpieces and vintage stunt work rolling into the beautifully sultry voice of Adele's them song. This really is a an awesome 50 year tribute, somewhat bringing it full circle in a rather kaleidoscope manner. Its not without flaws, every bond movie has its flaws but as long as there is heart and soul put into the production, which this has in abundance, it has my total adoration and cheer.
I love all 6 generations of Bond films and a bit drunk with the film at the moment, therefore I cannot rank this amongst them, so its just down to how I feel right now...I feel like I want to see it again this weekend...So I think I'll give it 8.5/10ths of my loving.
Loved it.
I agree with a lot of the above, at times JB could have stepped straight out of Diamonds Are Forever!
I'm biased, I love Bond obviously classics like Goldfinger, Goldeneye, You Only Live Twice etc and even have have a soft spot for the camper Diamonds Are Forever and the more far fetched Moonraker, only Quantum of Solace and OHMSS leave me cold.
This is more like the character driven Casino Royale with a lighter touch at times (funny lines that never become quips) with plenty of action which isn't edited so it's incomprehensible and much less of the blatant product placement which has blighted previous films.
Basically it's great fun with a lot more 3 dimensional characters than a lot of the films and has some great nods to previous movies.
Bond lovers will love it, others may find fault which may be justified, but for 2 hours I didn't care -
I felt like a big kid again.
