Dear John

Well, I thought this went from "Dear John" to "dear me!". I liked the Charleston scenery, was not averse to looking at Channing Tatum's body... , but found this very unidimensional, bland.... Didn't even bring the tissues out. And it was overlong.

Richard Jenkins was brilliant as the dad (John's dad - hope this answers Baty's question) - most would have overacted this role. But I guess he is used to playing oddballs - he was outstanding in "The Visitor" (which I thought was a great film). He was the dad in "Six Feet Under" too.

But, I never saw what anyone saw in "The Notebook", so was not expecting very much. It passed the time, and it was great to be back in a cinema after a few weeks of small screen only, though and great to touch base with the usual crew (but where was allsinging...?) But I was looking at my watch.

Maybe I'm being a bit negative. PeteYork's friend Joyce thought it was a good story....

Seen this film this morning (thanks to Dian65)
It did have a promising start but then it fell into rich, beautiful girl falls for tough but flawed man. Did think the ending was a bit weak and thought it could have been grittier - haven't read the book,it has a different ending?

Who was his dad? The credits rolled quickly and people got up so missed his name, will be looking this up later, thought his acting was good.

It did pull on the heart strings and would give it 7/10

Yeah the book ending is different, much better in my opinion.

I saw this in Edinburgh Ocean yesterday. It was 80% full which was not bad for 10am on tehy wramest day of the year so far!

I actually liked it. I thought it was going to been an angst ridden teen drama aimed at 15 year olds but it was much better than that. I thought Channing Tatum was very good and the chap who played his autistic father was excellent. Amanda Seyfried was def. the weakest link, particularly nearer the end of the film.

So if you are over 25, I can say it's safe to go and see this, I really liked it and my husband said ti was OK so that's a positive endorsement in my eyes!

7.5/10 from me.

Saw the movie y'day despite my misgivings with adaptations of N Sparks books...The movie was exactly what I expected (shallow, plodding and generally a snooze fest) and that was disappointing...Most of the characters were very uni-dimensional & predictable and the letters became tiresome after a certain point....C Tatum can't act to save his life and I've always disliked A Seyfried thanks to Mama Mia...I know this is sounding very biased but hey, I cant help it...

4/10 and an utter waste of a Sunday morning - should have stuck to Sunday supplement on SS1 :-)

Just saw this at a packed covent garden cinema. I also met beate for the first time so nice to put a face to the name.
I thought the film was way too slow with not much happening really throughout. I kept hoping for some action but nothing instead kept looking at my watch .
Wish I hadn't bothered really . 3/10 from me

I enjoyed myself tonight! The silly film made me cry at the end so I must have been in the mood for a weepie. It's pretty standard Nicholas Sparks fare but I knew what I was letting myself in for, and the Dad and his coin collection were brill!

Lovely meeting some regulars I know and some new faces like tilly. I also sat next to sunnysaver from MSE and I hope I have persuaded her to join here! Also many thanks to tufty for the lovely surprise, my first birthday present this week!

7.5/10 The OH loved it too. Those sweeping Southern state mansions are something else!

Saw this tonight in Edinburgh Wester Hailes which seemed to have some new seats in the foyer, really good as old ones had holes in them.

Nice to see Biggins and her friend there too.

My friend and I quite enjoyed it. The star of the film was the father despite the fact he was so underplayed, could have shown more of the father/son relationship. Quite an enjoyable film with a few twists in it. Felt the letter writing scenes dragged on a bit much tho and Savannah was not really a believable character. The scenes showing the impact of 9/11 were quite good. Not read the book tho and would love if someone could pm me with the ending in the book.

Good chick flick but def not one my hubby would have liked

Also saw this at Covent Garden, I was a bit envious of the 2 guys that walked out after about 30 mins as i wanted to join them but my gf made me stay.
Im not saying it was a bad film, just that it was way too slow for me.

I was at covnet garden saw beate and OH. For me, the film was a lot better than I was expecting. NOt to say it was good but a lot better than some of the stuff I saw last year. this was mainly due to the father son relationship rather than the love story. 6/10

I was really looking forward to this, tissues at the ready (I love a weepy) but it had been cancelled at the Printworks in Manchester. The staff were brilliant and very apologetic and we were all allowed to watch whatever film we liked so we chose The Bounty Hunter which was good fun, I'm biased if Gerard Butlers in it and it was also the next film on and as my daughter still had homework to do we couldn't stay too late. I don't know what everyone else watched as there was only about 20 of us at the screening and I'm guessing some of them had pa*d.
