Re: What We Do In The Shadows
Saw this last night in Edinburgh. I enjoyed it and laughed throughout. I did think that it started strong and seemed to lose momentum. 6.5/10
Re: What We Do In The Shadows
I did not say that Beate's opinion was invalid, only that it didn't contribute to a discussion: similar to your post, except that Beate has something to say about the film (having seen it) - and you don't.Yinster wrote:It is a film discussion forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion which are all valid. We all don't like the same things nor would I want everyone to have the same opinion. That would make a very boring world. In the same way you enjoyed this film, Beate didn't and has posted so. If this was a blockbuster and Beate still didn't like it you won't be pushing it as much.umral wrote: Last time I looked, this was a Film Discussion forum. With the greatest respect, saying (and I paraphrase) "I didn't enjoy it" "I was bored" and "my opinion is as good as yours" contributes precisely zero to the discussion.
I haven't seen What We Do In The Shadows so know little of it. However I do know it was an independent New Zealand film. Would I go and see it if given the chance? Perhaps as I have seen some surprises in the years. But you strongly encouraging someone who has given their personal view makes me gone off the film.
In the words of a huge Disney blockbuster "Let It Go"
Of course I couldn't care less if Beate (or you) trashed the next Tom Cruise movie. No matter what you say, there's going to be another one next year. This is absolutely not the case for small independent filmmakers, whose reputations and livelihoods are on the line.
Don't tell me WHAT you thought of a film - that's truly boring for the reader, and I suspect for the poster. Tell me WHY you thought what you did - that's potentially far more interesting. And if you can't do that ... at least try to be funny,

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
Don't tell me what to say or think, ok? You come across as really rude. I don't take kindly to being told I have to appreciate a film simply on the basis of it being independent or having not cost a lot. I either like a film or I don't. Who made it has nothing to do with it. I like some indie films and don't like others. I like some blockbusters and don't like others. But do not tell me that my contribution to this or any other thread is less important than yours or should have been phrased differently. Who do you think you are?

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
I have to agree with Beate. Who made the film is irrelevant. I didn't particularly like this film either but I wasn't fussed on Interstellar either. Some things appeal whilst others don't but nobody here has to state why. That isn't always possible. Also not everyone has the time to state exactly why we like or dislike a film.
Why does it bother you so much? Do you have a vested interest in this film? Even if you do, being rude is not the best way to encourage people to see it.

Fair enough..but do you really think what you wrote previously was significantly more positive and/or insightful?umral wrote:These guys are exponentially braver than me - and I suspect, you - in doing what they do, and they deserve a little more respect for clearly putting heart (and soul!) into such projects.

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
I thought it was terrible. I've never walked out of a film but I left half an hour after it started. I was hoping it didn't get any better in case I missed it but from from people are saying, it doesn't sound like it did. Disappointment :-(

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
Probably my favourite film of the year.......so far!
Original, clever, humorous and very quotable...."We're werewolves not swearwolves"!!
A Spinal Tap of the vampire genre! And definitely needs a second viewing for the subtleties missed first time around!
Can I just say that this is a fantastic site, filled with lots of great, generous people.........who's cinematic taste is mostly the opposite of mine! But I wouldn't disrespect them by dissecting their review just cos it doesn't fit with my taste!

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
i thought it might be a marmite film. put me in the loved it camp.
it was prob one of the strangest films i have seen in years. i enjoyed the mocumentary format; i kept thinking 'where are they gong with this?' and it went nowhere, llike a really good shaggy dog tale. there were some shockingly gory bits and some very funny lines. i am also looking forward to watching it on dvd with some friends where we can throw popcorn at the screen and laugh at the cheesy bits. it did drag a bit in the middle, tho but the ending was hilarious.
i would never have seen this if it wasn't free. i would never have crossed my radar (i normally avoid horror films) but i am so glad i watched this. i have had a great week for non-blockbustery film. a weird and wonderful tonic.

Me and my mates also found this borderline hilarious, there was a lot more they could have done with it but it was funny all the same :)
