Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
I am joining you from the internet cafe from a ridiculously small PC screen and someone next to me talking loudly in a foreign language on Skype or whatever. Blergh.
Film was solid entertainment, of course totally unbelievable, but contrary to Knight and Day it didn't matter one bit. Some really funny moments.

Nice to see everyone again!
I thought it was a 5.5/6.0 out of 10... As Beate says it was unbelievable... a few moments which made me jump. I thought more would be made out of the ending!
Come back Mickey

Beate: what are you going to do with no internet at home?!!! Better watch CSI.

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Just looking the actors up on imdb and aha, I was right - Veronica was Monica Bellucci and young Dave was Frank "call me Pablo" from The Rebound! The blonde woman however, who looked at lot like Alice Eve, was someone else entirely. I am guessing they have an endless supply of smiley blonde actresses in Hollywood...

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Edinburgh Omni Centre was about 80% full tonight. Sat behind Biggins and her pals and nice to have a wee chat.
Film was perfectly acceptable as entertainment and I thought Nick Cage did a good job.
Completely unbelievable plot but that was expected! The special effects were impressive and teh CGI was good compared to many films I've seen recently.
We had some entertainment about 3/4 through when an older couple came in complete with their Lidl poly bag; he fell up the stairs and then they coyuldn't get seats together so they barged their way into 2 separate rows up the back, then after 2 minutes decided to move down the front to sit together. they lasted about 10 minutes and then they left. I suspect they sneaked in after they'd seen something else but completely confused left again! they were top notch entertaiment!!
Back to the film, 6.5/10 from me.
My OH saw this in Aberdeen tonight and it's an 8 from him and his Mum! Aberdeen was 65% full and apparently everyone was eating which is certainly not the norm in Edinburgh. Their sound and colour swent for 10 minutes near the end but recovered for the finale.
Night Night.

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
This was pretty dumb, but nowhere near as bad as I'd feared. The effects were decent, but I can't say I was blown away. In the end, you can't really go wrong with Alfred Molina. The stunning Ms Bellucci did not have anywhere near enough screen time and when she was- so much fabric!!! Shame.
I liked the nod to Fantasia, as silly as it was, which apparently was the inspiration for the film. In fact
if you stick around til the credits finish, there's another nod and the hint of a sequel
I'd go 6/10.

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
We were thinking this was trying to be a Harry Potter film but not quite! Still it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. And it was very nice seeing so many familiar faces in the cinema.
Someone a few posts back mentioned Alice Krige who played Morgana. I think her first big role was in Chariots of Fire where she played Sybil Gordon (girlfriend to Harold Abrahams). She looked stunning in that. I shall always remember that film as we saw it in Helsinki after spending 5 days on the TransSiberian Railway from Beijing where we were living. See how old I am!

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Complete nonsense, but enjoyable nonsense. Pretty typical Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney fare then.
Nicolas Cage was adequate. A not entirely convincing attempt at a tortured soul that he couldn't quite pull off. The key female roles were also sadly disappointing. Teresa Palmer was likeable enough as the love interest but both Alice Krige and Monica Belluci were completely wasted. Trapped for 90% of the movie in the Grimhold (think glorified Russian nesting doll) and therefore off-screen for way too long. Cage and Belluci had little chance to build any chemistry in the slightly rubbish opening scene so their story didn't feel as emotionally involving as it should have. And why hire Alice Krige if your not going to give her the chance to do what she does best? The woman can do an excellent evil baddie in her sleep. So let her.
Thank god for the remaining cast then. Jay Baruchel was fantastic. In his 3rd lovable loser role this year (after How to Train Your Dragon and She's Out of My League), it really is a joy to see him in such a high profile role. And fresh from Prince of Persia, Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell were both great. Molina as Horvath managing to do flamboyant bad guy without going too far over the top, something he left to Toby Kebbell who pretty much stole the movie as a celebrity magician who helps Molina. His Star Wars line was hilarious.
The special effects were pretty good overall and the action scenes enjoyable. Not a great movie but a fun one. If you've liked previous Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney movies like National Treasure or Prince of Persia you'll probably get a kick out of this.
Oh and for those that can be bothered, stay until the end of the credits for an extra scene which sets up a sequel.

Re: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Exceeded my expectations. But they were running about on the floor for scraps before i saw this. Now they are level to my stomach.
I actually had a bit of enjoyment from this as a few jokes made me chuckle a good few times ("These arent the droids your looking for" and Alfred trying to communicate through the mirror he was trapped in). So that's something i guess. However plot was predictably predictable and removing the special effects you get the same old "ditzy kid gets hot girl" story. Also the good chuckling scenes were unfortunately counter balanced by cheese (the brooms and mops cleaning on their own gave me yawn syndrome).
Overall, 6.5/10. Entertaining but standard.
