The Other Guys
Re: The Other Guys
Andrews, the audience seemed to like it and I spotted Kim Newman of Empire magazine there (hard not to spot him). But then it really depends how much you like Will Ferrell and his type of shouty, goofy humour. Put it this way, the free beer was a nice touch, but I would not have pa*d to see it.
Re: The Other Guys
Encouraged by the positive press reviews (e.g. 5 stars from The Guardian today!), my sister and I went to see this, but we were underwhelmed and I think Paulkersey summed it up very well in his first post in this thread, i.e. it was over-long and didn't live up to expectations but Mark Wahlberg was good. I've seen funnier films this year - City Island was a riot by comparison - although on the plus side, it was the first time I'd ever seen Michael Keaton playing a relatively normal part as opposed to being over-the-top and infuriating.

Re: The Other Guys
Have to say I really enjoyed this. Definitely hit and miss like most McKay/Ferrell offerings but when it's funny it's really funny. I laughed out loud....a lot, which is the least I can ask of a comedy. Admittedly the crime aspect of the story is weak, confusing and unfocussed without a decent villain to jeer (Steve Coogan is unconvincing, Ray Stevenson has an awful Australian accent and Anne Heche isn't in it enough), but I thought the Ferrell/Wahlberg double act was fun. I still prefer Anchorman but enjoyed this more than I thought I would. God knows what Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian is thinking though. He gave it 5 stars. It's not that good.

Re: The Other Guys
Yep that is spot on, saw this today and the whole film felt a bit like that. There were a couple of vaguely funny bits, but I was quite disappointed as I expected at least a few laughs from a Will Ferrell film, but I agree it was a bit of a mess unfortunately, and came accross as a bit amateurish. 5/10Paulkersey wrote:there are many moments where it feels as if the camera just rolled hoping to catch some improvised comedy gold which didn't happen.

Re: The Other Guys
Saw this today using a Cineworld freebie and I dunno, maybe I was just in a good mood, but I enjoyed it a lot. It's totally stupid, as it's meant to be and it's fun. I agree that the antagonists aren't well developed but it was all pretty entertaining. I was roaring after "Aim for the bushes"... so incredibly stupid, total guilty pleasure. I'll admit that I'm a total Mark Wahlberg fan. Of course a lot of his roles involve him being angry, but he does it well and I like his mannerisms. His scenes with Eve Mendes are gold. I was very satisfied with this one- 8/10.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: The Other Guys
I saw this yesterday at Cineworld, Boldon. I did not find it at all funny. I kept waiting for the opportunity to laugh out loud, but it was not forthcoming. I was not alone - there wee about 60 people in the screen, and they weren't laughing either. I suppose we all laugh at different things. This wasn't one of those times for me.
I came home, and had a look at some reviews for the film - not surprisingly, (in my opinion), I found that the reviews were either extremely positive or very negative.
Perhaps - dare I say it - it's more of a lad's film.
I'm giving it 5/10.

"Perhaps - dare I say it - it's more of a lad's film." (Andrews)
You've beaten me to it, Andrews - this was the conclusion I reached, having seen it and read the conflicting reviews.
Though when my sister and I saw it, there was only one other person in the auditorium (a chap) and we didn't hear him laugh once.

Re: The Other Guys
The Other Guys is 'laugh out loud' funny. When I went to see it, everyone in the theatre clearly thought so too, judging by the laughter. It was only the lack of plot that stops me giving this film full marks.
Re: The Other Guys
I really enjoyed this film and laughed out load a lot!
My boyfriend kept nudging me telling me to shut up. It's probably one of those films you either love or hate. If you don't like Will Ferrell, I would not recommend it. I think you just need to be in a silly mood to enjoy this film. I also saw going the distance the day after and loved that too

Billed as a brilliant NYPD comedy genius spoof, if I’d pa*d to see this film I’d have wanted my money back under the trades description act!
I did not enjoy this vacuous second rate cop comedy drama on any level whatsoever - at all.
Pure unadulterated rubbish, in my opinion, and very little to smile about - a complete waste of 107 minutes.
4 out of 10.
