I think TSN is totally over-hyped. It's good, but to me not in the same league as The King's Speech. It's just not interesting enough and I don't care what anyone says, the acting isn't exactly mindblowing. It's still a good film, but TKS is a work of art.superhero wrote:You're right! but not many people have seen The King's Speech yet in the States as it's only still on limited release... we shall see
Can someone who has seen both films tell me what they think? I haven't seen the Social Network yet, so can't compare

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: Oscars 2011
Thats what I thought too but TSN has been collecting all the little critics circle awards so far in the States! I am just hoping my theory that TKS is only on limited release there hence it hasn't got the momentum yet.

Re: Oscars 2011
Not that I've seen it, but on the contrary I believe TKS' casting is so very safe, bankable and uninspired it's not worth thinking about. Award nominations were inevitable.weirdfilms33 wrote:I think on the acting side The King's Speech is far stronger with its cast of British thespians.
The Social Network, on the other hand, is daring in its casting - for an actor who's popularly confused with Michael Cera you wouldn't have thought a major studio would deem Jesse Eisenberg well-known enough to market its film on. Andrew Garfield, meanwhile, is barely known at all, and Justin Timberlake's inclusion was baiting a negative, smug reaction.
The fact that all three performances were widely acclaimed is testament to their sheer ability. Garfield's career is about to go supernova - he is of much, much greater interest as a British talent than an oft-typecast "posh British accent man" who only recently has been relocated to performance-centric heritage films by the star system. Yes, I'm talking about Mr Darcy.
No, even if I weren't still dazzled by the genius of The Social Network, I still wouldn't root for The King's Speech at the Oscars. Not for performances, at any rate, even if by some wild stretch of the imagination they deserved it. To repeat, the casting is incredibly lazy.

Looks that way at the moment, The King's Speech opens wider this week in the States, hopefully it will do some catching up this week and pick up some momentum

I thought I was doing well on that list until I decided to count the ones I have seen or have tickets for and got a miserable 22.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.
Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

Re: Oscars 2011
I've seen a whopping 22 on that list!
I'm holding free tickets for a further 3 - Rabbit Hole, Tangled, The Fighter, and I'm definitely going to see another 5 - True Grit, Hereafter, Black Swan, Tron legacy and Barney's version.
I notice that Yogi Bear isn't on that list!!!!
Can't imagine why not.
