Asgard was too sci fi looking, the costumes and decors appeared quite cheap... I don't regret seeing it, it wasn't that bad, but still.. Oh yes and the 3d was pointless and sort of non existent. 6/10 from me

Really? I thought it was great. Only really weak point was the forced and non developed romance. She showed no reason for liking him other than "he's hot". She didnt seem to be woo'd by his personality, or even how much of a mystery he was. Sure that was motivation for following him, but not to be attracted to him. However the strong mythology and world building and fish out of water character development was both interesting and a joy to watch. And the 3d was excellent. Sure during the dialogue scenes it was pointless, but the fights in the rain provided a real gorgeous amount of depth to the image, and Asgard in 3d looked stunning. It also added alot to the battle scenes with The Destroyer and Loki

8/10 from me

After saving TheyCallMeMrGlass a seat and chatting to him rapidly about Star Wars and Blade Runner, the film began. Lots of reserved seats, no idea who they were for, but I did see a guy who looked A LOT like Chris Hemsworth afterwards, felt like bowing down to him, but I wasn't even sure if it was. Now, to the film.

Well, I liked it, a bit cheesy and far too many dutch angles, but it's clearly crafted by someone with a passion for the source material. It's also very funny. Muddled as it gets by the third act, it's more accessible than I expected it to be, and Chris Hemsworth did an excellent job as Thor. I'd give it 7/10.

An action-packed spectacle which I rather enjoyed. The visual landscape of Asgard was stunning. It had an otherworldly quality to it and I was mesmerised at the wide passing shots of the whole kingdom. The 3D wasn’t maximised to its full potential in this film.

This had a reasonable mixture of drama and action. The acting was good with a strong supporting cast (especially Hopkins and Elba). I think Hemsworth did a remarkable job as the lead playing him arrogant and charming yet redeemable. I must point out that the transformation happens in the blink of an eye rather than being a gradual character development. Portman was good but she didn’t have much to work with other than playing a ‘feisty scientists’. The storyline with Logi was never properly developed and he was a weak villain.

I found this mindless entertainment and would recommend it for the special effects alone. 7.5/10.

My favourite line “It’s Xena, Jackie Chan and Robin Hood”.

While i agree he wasnt developed enough, i have to disagree that he was a weak villain. Loki's main strength is to manipulate the world around him just by showing up and planting small seed's of doubt in peoples minds, then disappearing into the background. I thought his role in the film was exactly that. Tricking Thor into Banishment, tricking the Frost Giant into assassinating Odin just so Odin could "see" Loki save his life, etc. I think him being in the foreground and being "grrr im bad" is worse for his character IMO

It was good to meet Weirdo and chat STAR WARS. I swear if Beate and a_person were there, they would have slapped us hard several times out of sheer annoyance. Weirdo and his friend swore they saw Chris Hemsworth sitting somewhere nearby though methinks whatever he and his friends were taking last night havent quite worn off...college kids, tut tut.

When I started this thread with the trailer, I prayed that Kenneth Branagh would learn from his mistakes with Frankeinstein and thankfully I am glad to say he learnt a great deal from those mistakes. Dont get me wrong this aint no Branagh's Henry V, this is just pure popcorn entertaintainment but a throroughly enjoyable introduction to Thor for the big screen. Chris Hemsworth played the part with a lot of energy and I have to admit from a bloke's point of view, annoying good looks. Anthony Hopkins added much needed heavyweight presence as Odin but its a role he has quite frankly played a gazillion times but I never tire of it, so I'm not complaining. And nice seeing Natalie Portman yet again, this time playing the sweet determine scientist girl who falls for the strangely mannered good looking guy. Nothing too taxing for any of them but they do give a re-assuring aura about them.

But what is a relief is that we have Thor now fully established in the connected Marvel universe that started with the recent Iron Man movies, Incredible Hulk and the upcoming Captain America culminating with all of them united in the Avengers. There was a slight worry that Thor would ruin the illusion of the more Earthly ground based Iron Man movies. But not anymore, its all coming together nicely.

FOr those of you who enjoy these Marvel adaptions and the building up to the Avengers, I urge you to go back to the previous films (Iron Man 1 & 2, Incredible Hulk) and watch the end of credit sequences if you haven't already. If you didn't know about them, they tell a seperate story strand that will culminate to a certain upcoming Marvel movie. The end credit sequence of Thor is the most fascinating yet as it actually takes a major development in the story strand ;) It was the longest bloody end of credit sequence I've ever seen in any movie!

Oh one last thing, the film is in 3d and once again, it practically nearly ruined all the action scenes for me. And the whole film was dark. God I hate watching live action films in 3D. So I am going to watch this again in the cinema in glorious 2D and enjoy those sweeping shots of Asgard that Funthing nicely described because I sure didnt get that effect with the 3D. Sigh.

Oh I'll give this 7.5/10.

I enjoyed the movie actually, thought it was quite entertaining and i left the cinema wanting more. I do agree with the 3D part though, nothing really popped out. Throughout the movie, I was waiting for Thor to say "Oh, no... this is Earth, isn't it" from the trailer. Did that cut that part out from the movie, or did i miss it?

No they cut that line out. I think it was an appropriate cut though, it would have been in the scene when they first found Thor.

Decent flick, pointless use of 3D again. As someone said earlier, 3D and live action doesn't work.

Did everyone spot the traditional Stan Lee cameo?

Thought this was very enjoyable. Knew when to take itself seriously (Asgard) and when not to (Earth) which worked incredibly well. Admittedly some of the Asgard scenes verged on the unintentionally silly but never to the detriment of the film. But the humour in the scenes on Earth made for a nice contrast (Thor barging into a pet shop and demanding 'I want a horse!' being a particular high-light).

Chris Hemsworth was very good in the lead role and had a decent amount of chemistry with Natalie Portman. Anthony Hopkins brought a suitable gravitas to Odin as did Idris Elba as Heimdall, although Rene Russo was underused as Thor's Mother. Both Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings were good too as Portman's colleagues.

The action set-pieces were incredibly well done, the battle against the Frost Giants in particular was great and could have gone on longer. The special effects varied but when they were good they were very good. Unsurprisingly the 3D was mostly a waste of time and I'd like to see the film again without it.
As for the Dutch angles they weren't as annoying as I'd thought they'd be from the trailers. They only really stood out on a couple of occasions.

Thankfully the film felt more like a stand alone film unlike Iron Man 2 which felt like an extended teaser for The Avengers. Admittedly the Jeremy Renner/Hawkeye cameo was kind of pointless but the post-credit scene gave enough of a hint of what's to come without feeling intrusive.
Kenneth Branagh has, against all odds, made a highly entertaining summer blockbuster film out of something that could have been camp and laughable.

Oh no! I didn't stay to the end because I wanted to avoid all the crowds of people leaving. Can you please tell me what happened?

I do also think this film had just the right about of humour and one liners to prevent it being OTT.

Also spotted the Stan Lee cameo - he was the truck driver trying to get the hammer out of the crater right?
