Watched this at the 70% full O2 tonight. Not exactly chock-a-block due to the ID checking system perhaps?
The movie was great...but (and it pains me to be odd one out again), it was nowhere near as good as The Dark Knight. Personally, I enjoyed even Batman Begins a bit more. I found the first and last thirds of this to be equally epic, but the middle portion left a (relatively) great deal to be desired. Thought some of it was a tad too reminiscent of the first chapter, a little too rushed and not all that interesting either.
Ok that's the bad. The good: Anne Hathaway. Poised, sophisticated and uber-confident. This is the best I've seen Anne Hathaway in any cinematic production yet. While the movie didn't quite manage to blow away my expectations, she certainly did. As for Tom Hardy...well...he's a far better actor than what he had to work with. On the other hand, displaying emotion with half of one's face covered isn't exactly the easiest feat, so no grudges there. And for all you guys moaning about his incoherence let me just tell you, if you'd heard what he sounded like at the prologue shown last December, you'd be damn grateful. They cleaned up his dialogue BIG TIME! I managed to understand about 98% of his lines. That's over a thousand percent improvement.
In terms of direction, once again Nolan donned his Michael Mann hat and went (mostly) the same route as he did with The Dark Knight. So this felt less a superhero saga and more a crime thriller. The story was probably the weakest point, courtesy of one of my most hated writers in the business (David S. Goyer *blecch*). Thankfully Nolan manages to weave most of this noise into a taut, exciting extravaganza.
Still, as negative as much of this sounds, it's only meant to sound this way because of the greatness it had to live up to. It's an extremely worthy sequel, a fiery conclusion to an emotional and powerful trilogy. A chapter I will strongly recommend to all my friends, but not one I'm likely to revisit as many times as its predecessors.
